Write Quality Content - Not Unique Content

As the news of unique content began spreading on the Internet, the concept of PLR or, Private Label Articles was born. Basically PLRs were simply articles were written by copywriters and who offered their work for sale to website owners wishing to put new content on their websites. The buyer was given permission to use them in anyway they saw fit, even to the point of taking credit for the article. Thus the issue of content richness was solved. But, as more and more of these articles began appearing on the Internet, the uniqueness of the article was lost and websites became targets for placement in Google's “Supplemental Index”. The “Sups” as the industry began to call it, turned out to be a very bad place for web sites to be relegated. Websites in the “Sups”, do not show up in the regular search engine result pages as regular search results due in part, to “duplicate content”. Duplicate content is considered a bad thing – especially for Google, and the other major players such as Yahoo and MSN are now following suit by adapting this philosophy and appropriate algorithms to their SERPs.

Eventually, someone came up with the idea of taking PLRs and turning them into unique content by replacing words using a thesaurus. This was a tedious task and it wasn't long before software was introduced with built in thesaurus dictionaries that could be more or less programmed and word replacement was nearly automatic. However work was still required because some words didn't always properly match the context. This required close scrutiny to make certain thesaurus replacement words made sense. Once certain aspects of the software were configured, whole articles could be fed to these software machines and spat out as a new, reworded article. This technique came to be known as “Spinning” an article and the term - and the technique - is still in heavy useage today.

For a while simple word replacement was adequate. But eventually the Search Engines came to recognize this as well. Today there are many “Content Spinner” programs, with varying degrees of sophistication, and the better ones such as “Website Content Wizard” allow for complex nesting techniques of entire phrases where each article will appear to be completely different. Of course the level of “uniqueness” is in direct proportion to how much extra work you are willing to invest in a project.

Although the world wide web is starting to mature into more complicated algorithms, there is still much to be garnered from the basic concept placing unique content on you websites. There may be a place for such tools as content spinners, but by their very nature, they are SEO techniques and are therefore, artificial. There is no room to pretend on this issue. A website where you devote yourself completely to setting your own personal tone, wit and style, will in the long run prove to be more beneficial.
